Every Monday from 7pm to 9pm, we host an old time music jam at the Market Street Tavern in downtown Chattanooga, near the intersection of Market and MLK.  It’s a non-smoking restaurant/bar, and the food there is great.  Anyone interested in playing or listening to old time music is welcome to join us!

June 26: PERFORMANCE: Ed Huey, our newest teacher at the Folk School of Chattanooga, will give a concert at 2pm. Harmonica, singing, bones, spoons, and hambone! Suggested donation: $10, or $15 for a family. Bring the kids!  Location: Folk School of Chattanooga, 250 Forest Ave.

July 3: PERFORMANCE: Tatsuya Nakatani, solo percussionist. 8pm. $10.  Location: Folk School of Chattanooga, 250 Forest Ave.
Tatsuya Nakatani (from Osaka, Japan) utilizes drum set, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. He has performed in 80 cities in 7 countries and collaborated with 163 artists worldwide. In the past 10 years he has released over 50 recordings on CD. His solo concerts are based in jazz and improvised music, yet retain the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.

Tatsuya’s performance on July 3rd promises to be a beautifully explosive sonic celebration for the holiday weekend!

This concert is presented by the Shaking Ray Levi Society in partnership with the Folk School of Chattanooga.

July 13: PERFORMANCE: Jim Pankey and Bobby Burns CD release party, 8pm at the Folk School.  $15, includes a copy of the new cd!

July 13: PERFORMANCE: Megan Jean and the KFB, acoustic Americana. 7:30-9:30pm at the Stone Cup Coffeehouse on Frazier Ave.  Free!

July 17: DULCIMER DAY: This is an unstructured social gathering for both hammered and mountain dulcimer players, and a chance for the general public to come see a lot of dulcimers all in one place! We’ll have some snacks to share, we’ll hear music from our guests, play together, and have fun! 1pm – 5pm at the Folk School.  Free!

July 24: PERFORMANCE: Luke Richardson, banjo and harmonica. 7:30-9:30pm at the Stone Cup Coffeehouse on Frazier Ave.  Free!

July 25: WORKSHOPS: Luke Richardson will teach two workshops on Sunday, July 25: Clawhammer Banjo: 1pm. Harmonica: 3:30pm. Registration for these workshops is limited to 6 students per class.  You can reserve your place by registering here:

    Matt,

I met you at the Tavern Monday. You mentioned the website and I just wanted to let you know that I found it. I will be at the Tavern next Monday and I am looking forward to listening and hopefully being able to participate a little. Very nice website.

    Hey Reed,
Thanks for dropping us a line! I am sorry that yesterday turned out a little less-than-usual for a jam session, but we’re sure to be rolling again after the holidays. I’m really glad that I got a chance to talk to you, though, and hopefully we’ll make a regular out of you soon.

    Matt, Christie,

I had a great time at the jam session Monday. I do want to participate more. Could you let me know the names of some of the more popular tunes and what tuning that I need to be in? Look forward to next Monday.

A couple of sure bets in adae (your low string tuned up to a) include Forked Deer and Spotted Pony. We played both of those last Monday. Stay tuned, we’re going to try to post slow, learning-speed versions of popular Market Street Tavern jam tunes on this site.

Thanks for coming, and thanks for letting us know you liked it!

Perhaps it would help to define “Old Time Music” a little bit in the Jam event posting to avoid confusion and awkward situations. Just a thought.
